You’re not stupid. Or weak-willed.
But changing your diet has been a challenge for you for years.
We’ve all been there: wanting to change our diet but failing.
You want to make better choices, eat healthier, feel better, maybe lose some weight. And you’ve gotten off to a good start many times. But so far it never stuck.
You’re not the only one struggling with this.
Like many of us, you’ve probably tried several different diets and followed all the latest food recommendations… those which were featured online, in magazines and by friends. But even though they worked for others, they didn’t work for you.
At least never for very long.
You might think you just need to keep trying until you find the one “diet” that works for you.
But the truth is that no amount of trying and testing new ways of eating will make a difference until you change the way you think about new food choices.
The Enemy of Every Diet Change: The Mindset of Scarcity
Looking more closely at most diets, you’ll see they focus on not eating something or having considerably less of it. That could involve cutting out carbs or fats, reducing your portion size or avoiding fried foods. The list of possibilities is endless.
While the idea of cutting something out can make a diet sound more effective, this mindset of scarcity can also make you feel deprived and wake your inner rebel. For me that’s a reason for cravings, just knowing that I “can’t” have something.
Now, imagine feeling this conflicting sense of deprivation and craving for a whole month, year or the rest of your life, depending how long you want to keep up your new eating regimen. Just the thought of it might send a shudder down your back.
